Plans To Build a Terminal Near Kozhikode

As per recent news, the Adani Builders will be constructing a truck parking terminal on National Highway 66 which is currently being developed into a six-lane road. This terminal will be located between Vadakara Puthuppanam and Palolipala. It will have all the necessary facilities that are meant to improve the experience for the truck drivers out there. However, the current challenge with this construction is the lack of available space for carrying out the various operations of the project. The officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have already mentioned that they are currently trying their best to resolve this issue.

Adani Builders is currently contracted to expand the road from Azhiyur to Vekkalam. They will also be in charge of constructing the new terminal for the drivers. Once the site has been acquired, NHAI will start preparing the design and hand it over to the Adani Builders so that they can carry out the various stages of implementation of the project. This construction project marks the first instance of NHAI constructing a truck parking terminal in Kerala. It also highlights Adani Group’s dedication towards enhancing its control over the country’s logistic sector. With this initiative, the Adani Group will also be able to take one step ahead towards building an Adani Monopoly in the logistics area.

How Will the Parking Facility Benefit the Truck Drivers?

Truck owners and workers have long talked about the need for parking facilities along the Kozhikode bypass. This area has the highest influx of long-distance goods trucks.

Every day, a significant number of cargo lorries from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Punjab arrive in Valiyangadi at Kozhikode and the different surrounding areas. However, because of the absence of any kind of dedicated facilities, these trucks are parked on the roadside. This leads to a modest traffic congestion. The gas tanker lorries also frequently halt at the key points on the Kozhikode bypass, particularly at Ramanattukara and Thondayad.

The lorries that are coming to and from Valiyangadi often stop on the south beach near Kozhikode. This leaves the lorry drivers with no proper resting spots or restroom facilities.

However, there is no space available on the bypass. This led to the decision to build the terminal near Vadakara. Once the parking terminal has been built, the lorry drivers will get the required space to park their vehicles and rest for a significant amount of time before they can carry on with their journey. Around 100 lorries arrive in Kozhikode City every day from the different regions in the south beach. The local authorities have already initiated an effort to address the lorry parking situation.

The roadside parking has also started to cause various problems for the locals. The discussions regarding building a new parking terminal have been ongoing for a considerable amount of time but no such huge progress has been made. However, a plan involving private participation was developed through which the Adani Group was given the responsibility to handle the operations of the project. This facility is going to operate on a pay-and-parking basis. However, no further details have been released about the project yet. We expect that the details are going to be released soon after the design for the project is finalised.
